THE LIFE AND WORK OF THE CHURCH           David Cook, Liturgist

ENTERING GOD’S HOUSE

CALL TO WORSHIP

Leader: Here, in this place, in these moments, we can speak of what God has done:

People: the One who is closer than our imagination tells us.

Leader: Here, in these moments, with this people, we will sing of what God is doing:

People: the One who lives in us, and calls us the Beloved of the Lord.

Leader: In every place, at every moment, with every person, we dare imagine what God will do:

People: the One who will move us to serve others, to be with them as surely as God is with us.

*HYMN No. 417 Christ Is Made the Sure Foundation

* PRAYER OF CONFESSION

Leader: If our consciences were clear, we would have no need to confess. But we stand transparent before God, who knows our thoughts, our hearts, our misdeeds. Let us speak to the One who has promised not to put us to shame, but to forgive us of our sins.

People: As painful as it may be, God of our lives, we will try to speak our hearts. Called to live gently with our families and friends, we cause great hurt by our words and actions. Created in your image, we live as if it were the evil one who shapes our hearts. Given the simple command to love, we complicate it with our expectations, our fears, our doubts. You cannot overlook our sin, Loving God, and so you sent Jesus to redeem us. Through the waters of baptism, the fire of our failings is extinguished. Through the grace of your heart, we are made whole. Through the gift of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, we do indeed live, and move, and have our being with you.

* KYRIE ELEISON

Lord, have mercy upon us,

Christ, have mercy upon us,

Lord, have mercy upon us. Amen

* ASSURANCE OF PARDON

Leader: Do not be afraid of God. In love, God forgives us; in grace, God redeems us; in hope, God sends us forth to share this good news.

People: Through Christ’s resurrection, we become new people. Thanks be to God. Amen.

(Dr. Thom Shuman, Lectionary Liturgies, Easter 5 A)

ANTHEM God Bless America

The choir will sing the verse and chorus. The chorus will then be repeated with the congregation joining in.

* CHORUS: God bless America – land that I love, Stand beside her – and guide her

Through the night with a light from above

From the mountains, – to the prairies, to the oceans – white with foam,

God bless America, my home, sweet home, God bless America, my home, sweet home.

RESPONDING TO THE WORD

* THE APOSTLES’ CREED

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth.

And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead and buried, he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead, he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty, from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen
