THE LIFE AND WORK OF THE CHURCH          David Cook, Liturgist

ENTERING GOD’S HOUSE

CALL TO WORSHIP

Leader: Where shattered hearts are made whole, where wounded souls are healed, where life is stronger than death:

People: there, the stone has been rolled away.

Leader: Where the lonely become our friends, where a stranger is welcomed home, where hope is stronger than despair,

People: there, we find Jesus walking.

Leader: Where closed wallets are opened, where the anxious find serenity, where love is stronger than hate:

People: there, Jesus is opening our eyes.

Leader: The stone has been rolled away! Jesus is our companion on the journey! Our eyes are opened to the needs of others!

People: Alleluia! Christ is risen! Alleluia! Christ is with us!

*HYMN No. 466 O for a Thousand Tongues to Sing

*PRAYER OF CONFESSION

Leader: Here! Christ is here! In our hearts, in our lives, and in our midst. As on that road to Emmaus, Jesus is with us–teaching, loving, leading, feeding. Let us confess how we have overlooked the presence of the living Christ, and ignored the words he whispers to our hearts, as we pray, saying,

People: We become comfortable, Joyous God, with our lives, with our faith, with our friends and family. We are so secure, your gospel jars us with your hopes for us. We know we should tell your story, but doesn’t everyone who matters know it already? We could invite others to your table, but then we might have to share. We could welcome the strangers, but worry they might feel uneasy among so many unfamiliar faces. Forgive us, God of Easter. Walk with us, so we can become companions to the lost. Welcome us, so we can include the hopeless and the homeless. Love us, so we can share that love with everyone we meet on our journey, as we follow Jesus Christ, Lord and Savior, into life with you. Amen.

*KYRIE ELEISON

Lord, have mercy upon us,

Christ, have mercy upon us,

Lord, have mercy upon us. Amen

*ASSURANCE OF PARDON

Leader: God loves us so much, God will listen to our cries, our prayers, our hopes, and our dreams. God’s promises are for all, those who are right beside us, as well as those who live on the other side of the world.

People: What can we give for God’s grace? We will lift our hearts to God, giving thanks for the mercy that has been given to us. Thanks be to God! Amen.

RESPONDING TO THE WORD

*THE APOSTLES’ CREED

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth.

And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead and buried, he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead, he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty, from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen

The Christian Education and Worship Committees are fortunate to have Carrie Johnson to care for our children during the worship service. She has been a nursery worker at Mineral Springs United Methodist for ten years prior to being the director of their church’s Pre-School program. She is currently an employee of Union County Public Schools.
