THE LIFE AND WORK OF THE CHURCH            Claudia Thompson, Liturgist

ENTERING GOD’S HOUSE

CALL TO WORSHIP

Leader: On this first day, the Lord’s Day, we gather in this place, with this people:

People: though we have different gifts, we are blessed by the same God.

Leader: On that great day of Pentecost, the disciples gathered together:

People: though uncertain, they trusted God’s future, though many, they were one in Christ.

Leader: On the last day of all time, God’s daughters and sons will be together, in one place:

People: until then, we will talk of God’s dreams, with every breath we take, with every moment we live.

*HYMN No. 129 Come, O Spirit, Dwell Among Us

*PRAYER OF CONFESSION

Leader: Called to be one body, we live as fragmented members. Our selfish desires, our lust for more, our belief we have no need of others, leads not to unity, but to division.

Let us confess our brokenness to the God who saves us. People: In the arguments which divide us, Lord God, we cannot hear your voice calling us to be one. In the rush to judge others who speak, dress, or look different from us, we cannot stop to experience your grace.

In our devotion to our selves and our needs, we cannot open our hearts to receive your gifts. Silence our babeling lives, Sculptor of Wholeness, so we might hear the clear, sweet voice of the Spirit, announcing that we are forgiven, calling us to proclaim the good news to all the world, baptizing us into the Body of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. Amen.

* KYRIE ELEISON

Lord, have mercy upon us,

Christ, have mercy upon us,

Lord, have mercy upon us. Amen

*ASSURANCE OF PARDON

Leader: On this day, as on every day, God stands, arms wide open to embrace us; heart wide open to forgive us. Friends, this is the good news.

People: God’s glory is forever; God’s grace will never end. We will rejoice in God’s healing hope, as long as we have breath. Amen.

RESPONDING TO THE WORD

* THE APOSTLES’ CREED

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth.

And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead and buried, he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead, he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty, from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen
