Father’s Day

PRELUDE by Janesta Williams, Organist

THE LIFE AND WORK OF THE CHURCH by Claudia Thompson, Liturgist

ENTERING GOD’S HOUSE

CALL TO WORSHIP

Leader: It is the young man whom we know as the prodigal son who said in desperation, “I will arise and go to my father and I will say to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you. I am no longer worthy to be called your child, treat me as one of your servants.

People: In this time we recognize our own unworthiness and inadequacy.

Leader: Even as we return home to God, we hear the unexpected words of forgiveness, “Rejoice my child—you were dead and are alive again; you were lost and now are found.”

People: Let us rejoice that we are at home in God’s house.

*HYMN No. 293 This Is My Father’s World

*PRAYER OF CONFESSION (Unison)

Merciful God, we have fled your love because we believe it restricted our freedom. We’ve thought we know better than you what we need and that we could find it apart from you.

We confess to you our journey to many “far countries” and residence there: materialism, racism, secularism, nationalism. Initially, they looked so promising. But each has taken our trust and betrayed us. We have hurt ourselves and others. We have grieved you.

Still you waited for the stirrings you placed within us to send us back home where we belong. You still wait. Don’t stop waiting. Tug at our heart and minds so we will remember whose we are. Show us the way from the far country of estrangement to the banquet hall of reconciliation.

In the name of Jesus, who died and paid the price that forgiveness always extracts from the forgiver. Amen.

* KYRIE ELEISON

Lord, have mercy upon us,

Christ, have mercy upon us,

Lord, have mercy upon us. Amen

*ASSURANCE OF PARDON

Leader: On this day, as on every day, God stands, arms wide open to embrace us; heart wide open to forgive us. Friends, this is the good news. People: God’s glory is forever; God’s grace will never end. We will rejoice in God’s healing hope, as long as we have breath. Amen.

RESPONDING TO THE WORD

* THE APOSTLES’ CREED

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth.

And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead and buried, he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead, he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty, from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.
