ENTERING GOD’S HOUSE

CALL TO WORSHIP
Leader: The Lord our God brought us out of the land of Egypt.
People: The Lord our God brings us here to worship.
Leader: We come this day to focus our hearts and minds on the Holy One of Israel.
People: Let the words of our mouths and the meditations of our hearts be acceptable to you, O Lord, our Rock and our Redeemer.

*HYMN No. 442 The Church’s One Foundation

*PRAYER OF CONFESSION (Unison)
We confess to you, gracious God, that it is hard to be foolish in the eyes of our friends and family.
We want to be seen as wise and smart.
We want to be seen as people who have life figured out.
We are afraid of being called foolish!
But the call you put before us to follow the cross of Christ is foolish to the world.
Draw us once again to your Word that we might have confidence in the truth of the gospel and proclaim your good news to all we meet. Amen.
(Book of Common Worship, PCUSA, p 57)

*KYRIE ELEISON
Lord, have mercy upon us. Christ, have mercy upon us. Lord, have mercy upon us. Amen.

*ASSURANCE OF PARDON
Leader: Anyone who is in Christ is a new creation.
The old life has gone and a new life has begun.
Know that you are forgiven and be a peace.
People: Amen!
(Book of Common Worship, PCUSA, p. 57)

RESPONDING TO GOD’S WORD

*DECLARATION OF FAITH
We believe that in the death of Jesus on the cross
God achieved and demonstrated once for all the costly forgiveness of our sins.
Jesus Christ is the reconciler between God and the world.
He acted on behalf of sinners as one of us,
fulfilling the obedience God demands of us,
accepting God’s condemnation of our sinfulness.
In his lonely agony on the cross
Jesus felt forsaken by God
and thus experienced hell itself for us.
Yet the Son was never more in accord with the Father’s will.
He was acting on behalf of God,
manifesting the Father’s love that takes on itself
the loneliness, pain and death
that result from our waywardness.
In Christ, God was reconciling the world to himself,
not holding our sins against us.
Each of us beholds on the cross
the Savior who died in our place,
so that we may no longer live for ourselves
but for him.
In him is our only hope of salvation.
