ENTERING GOD’S HOUSE

CALL TO WORSHIP
Leader: Welcome to this place:
People: where children and seasoned seniors can sit side by side, where heaven and earth embrace, where God has been, is, and always will be.
Leader: Welcome to this place, gathered with God’s people:
People: where we discover God’s love, where we hear the tender voice of Jesus, where the Spirit teaches us new songs.
Leader: Welcome to this place, prepared for us by God:
People: where we can bring our hunger and find satisfaction; where we can bring our despair and find hope; where we can bring our selves and find love.

*HYMN No. 276 Great Is Thy Faithfulness

*PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Leader: We hope to walk in integrity, but usually find ourselves stumbling down sin’s side roads, trying to find our own way in the world. But God would forgive us and teach us new songs of hope. Let us pray to empty ourselves of all we have done and failed to do, that we might be filled with mercy.
People: We find it hard to admit, Tender God, but we have lost our way. We have misplaced our love in the mess we have made of our relationships. We lose the words which might bring healing to a hurting friend, because we are so focused on ourselves.
We have lost our Oneness in you when we are lost in ourselves. So we need you to come and find us, and lead us back into your heart, Searching God.
We long for you to take us up in your arms and cradle us in your grace.
We yearn to turn around and find you waiting to welcome us with joy. And look! There you are! Reaching out to us with the love, the life, the peace which comes to us through Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. Amen.

*KYRIE ELEISON
Lord, have mercy upon us.
Christ, have mercy upon us.
Lord, have mercy upon us. Amen.

*ASSURANCE OF PARDON
Leader: God is not ashamed to call us sisters and brothers of the One who came to proclaim that God seeks to forgive us and make us whole.
People: Here we stand on holy ground, singing our songs of thanksgiving, blessing God for the gift of new life. Amen.

RESPONDING TO GOD’S WORD

*DECLARATION OF FAITH
Jesus broadened the definition of neighbor
to include those ordinarily despised and excluded.
His life in behalf of others
led to persecution and death.
He commanded his disciples to live the same way.
We believe Christ gives us and demands of us
lives that recognize all people in all cultures
as our neighbors on this planet.
Christ teaches us
to go beyond legal requirements
in serving and helping our neighbor,
to treat our neighbor’s needs as our own,
to care passionately for the other’s good
to share what we have.
It is part of our discipline
to live in simplicity,
avoiding greed and luxury
that threaten our neighbor’s survival.
We are obligated to speak the truth in love,
to listen with patience and openness,
to love our enemies, to accept the risk and pain which love involves. Amen.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

As we pray today we will be remembering Hebron Presbyterian Church in Blackstock, SC and its 32 members.

INQUIRER CLASS:
Would you like to know more about what it means to be a Presbyterian, opportunities within our congregation and steps to becoming a member? Join our minister in his office before worship on Sept. 9, 16 and 23 from 10:00 to 10:45 am. Any questions, call Randy at 803/417-6676.

**CONGREGATIONAL PLANNING RETREAT:
The leaders of the church want to hear from you! On Saturday September the 29th, a retreat is planned for the purpose of hearing your hopes and dreams for our congregation. We will meet from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm in the Fellowship Hall (and the date does not conflict with any USC and Clemson games!) Child care and lunch will be provided and all you need to bring is YOU. Any questions, call Stuart Graham at 803/804-6017.

DIMES FOR HUNGER:
As we heard last Sunday, our church is one of the top givers to a Providence Presbytery program where 50% of the October offering is used to feed the hungry in Lancaster County as well as providing emergency food assistance to agencies in the other counties of our presbytery. The remaining 50% of your gifts are enabling the poor in Honduras, Guatemala and Malawi, Africa to begin to feed themselves. Missionaries to and from Central America will be speaking along with Dr. Frank Strait (former President of the SCMA and member of the Hunger Action Team) at 5:30 pm on August 26 at the Annual Dimes for Hunger Kick Off Supper at First Presbyterian Church in Rock Hill. Please tell Randy or Rosa Sansbury today that you would like to attend.

SPECIAL THANKS: On behalf of the Strengthening Committee and the church family, a very special thank you and much appreciation to David, Krista, Chloe and Genevieve for the wonderful afternoon of fun and fellowship at their home last Sunday afternoon. Everyone attending had a great time!!

GREETERS AND USHERS: Rob and Carol Johns
