ENTERING GOD’S HOUSE

CALL TO WORSHIP
Leader: You are welcome in this place, where God meets us in love. People: Why are we here? We are here to love God with all that we have and all that we are.
Leader: You are welcome in this place, where God loves us as children. People: Why are we here? We are here to love ourselves as deeply as God
loves us.
Leader: Welcome to this place, where God offers love and grace in every moment of time. People: Why are we here? We are here to be sent forth to love others as deeply as we love God and ourselves

*HYMN No. 417 Christ Is Made the Sure Foundation

*PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Leader: The world teaches us many ways to love, but all are based on selfish desires and needs. God teaches us how to love: completely, uniquely, unconditionally. Let us confess our difficulty in loving as God teaches us, as we pray, saying:
People: We are hesitant to confess, Holy God, how hard it is to love as you wish. It is easy to love you with all that we are, except when you ask us to love our neighbor with all that we have. We find it hard to love our neighbor, when it is linked to the way we love ourselves.
And it is difficult to love anyone – even You – more than we love ourselves. Forgive us, Love Eternal. As you took a risk in creating us, help us to take risks to love others compassionately, to love ourselves genuinely, and to love you as completely as you love us in Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. Amen.

*KYRIE ELEISON
Lord, have mercy upon us.
Christ, have mercy upon us.
Lord, have mercy upon us. Amen.

*ASSURANCE OF PARDON
Leader: In God’s Kingdom, all are loved for who they are, not what they do; In God’s Kingdom, all are forgiven for what they do, and don’t do; In God’s Kingdom, all are welcomed and fed by God’s grace and hope.
People: Forgiven, loved, sent forth – we are not far from God’s Kingdom!
Thanks be to God. Amen.

SERMON
WHY WORSHIP? By Rev. McSpadden

RESPONDING TO GOD’S WORD

*DECLARATION OF FAITH

We acknowledge one God alone, whose demands on us are absolute, whose help for us is sufficient. That One is the Lord, whom we worship, serve, and love. We do not fully comprehend who God is or how he works. God’s reality far exceeds all our words can say. The Lord’s requirements are not always what we think is best. The Lord’s care for us is not always what we want. God comes to us on his own terms and is able to do far more than we ask or think. God makes himself known in Jesus Christ. Jesus’ involvement in the human condition is God’s involvement. His compassion for all kinds of people is God’s compassion. His demand for justice, truth, and faithfulness is God’s demand. His willingness to suffer rejection is God’s willingness. Jesus’ love for the very people who reject him is God’s love. As disciples of Christ we are called to praise and enjoy God. And to worship God is our highest joy.
