ENTERING GOD’S HOUSE

CALL TO WORSHIP
Leader: Listen! God, our beloved Creator, whispers to us:
People: echoes of grace sound in our hearts, hope resonates in our souls.
Leader: Listen! Christ, our Beloved friend, calls to us:
People: faithfulness is the life he shares, generous service is the path we can follow.
Leader: Listen, the Holy Spirit, our beloved Peace, transforms us:
People: the voice of our Beloved sounds through all creation, welcoming all into the household of God.

*HYMN No. 366 Jesus, Thy Boundless Love to Me

*PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Leader: How often do we give lip-service to God, holding back our hearts, our souls, our lives?
How often do we play at religion, when we are called to be faithful followers of Jesus?
Let us confess our faults and our failings, opening ourselves to the One who says, ‘Arise, come with me into the kingdom of hope and love.’
Please join me as we pray saying, People: We admit, God of Light, that we are much faster at talking, and too slow at listening. We are quick to engage in power-pleasing hyperbole, but hesitant to hear your simple words of hope, of justice, of renewal. We do not notice how our casual speech can cause great harm and pain to those around us. Forgive us, God of majesty and mercy, and let your grace refresh us like a summer afternoon’s rain shower. Pour your hope into our empty souls, till it overflows to all we have damaged. Call us to new life through the words and witness of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, in whose name we lift our prayers to you. Amen.

*KYRIE ELEISON
Lord, have mercy upon us.
Christ, have mercy upon us.
Lord, have mercy upon us. Amen.

*ASSURANCE OF PARDON
Leader: Did you hear the voice of the Beloved speaking to you – whispering words of hope, of grace, of forgiveness into your heart and into your soul? This is the good news which is for us! People: Our hearts overflow with the kindness and generosity God has planted deep within us. Our glad songs of joy are lifted to the One who forgives us. Amen. (Lectionary Liturgies, Ordinary 22-B)

THE OFFERING

*THE DOXOLOGY NO. 592

*PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING

*DECLARATION OF FAITH
Jesus was what we are. He grew up in a family and a society troubled by the common problems of the world. His knowledge was limited by his time and place in history. He felt deeply the joy of friendship and the hurt of being rejected. Jesus prayed, struggled with temptation, knew anger, and was subject to suffering and death. He was like us in every way except sin.
Jesus was what we should be. He served his Father with complete trust and unwavering obedience. He loved all kinds of people and accepted their love. In constant dependence upon the Holy Spirit, Jesus allowed no temptation or threat to keep him from loving God with his whole being and his neighbor as himself.
We recognize in Jesus what God created us to be. He exposes our failure to live as he lived. He demonstrates the new humanity God promises to give us through him. “Declaration of Faith,” PCUS, 1977, Chapter 4 (2),
