ENTERING GOD’S HOUSE

CALL TO WORSHIP
Leader: Welcome, friends, to this place.
People: Let us worship God in joy.
Leader: We are here in the presence of the One who feeds and protects us; who accepts us and loves us.
People: Let us worship God in thanksgiving.
Leader: We are here in the name of Jesus who told us that our treasure is not what we have but what we share.
People: Let us worship God in love.

*HYMN No. 559 We Gather Together

*PRAYER OF CONFESSION (Unison)
Compassionate God, forgive us, we pray, for forgetting that we are part of a wider family. It is easy to think that the things that are essential pertain only to us, that we are not to be grateful for those who came before us nor concerned for those who will come in the future. “As far as the east is from the west” is not speaking of our relationship with others in the world but of the depth of your grace in forgiving and renewing us. Grant that our faithfulness in this generation will be a sign of our gratefulness to our forebears, our love for our neighbors, and our grace to our children.
In the name of your Son. Amen.

*KYRIE ELEISON
Lord, have mercy upon us.
Christ, have mercy upon us.
Lord, have mercy upon us. Amen.

*ASSURANCE OF PARDON
Leader: Remember that God is a gracious God, who has been present throughout the generations.
People: God seeks us out and calls us to repentance, renewal, and reconciliation.
All: God loves us, and it is in the name of Jesus, God’s love incarnate, that we are forgiven. Amen

HEARING GOD’S WORD

*HYMN No. 170 The Lord’s My Shepherd, I’ll Not Want
(Please pass prayer cards to the end of the pew so they may be collected as we sing.)

SCRIPTURE Psalm 23
The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.
He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou are with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.
Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies; thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life; and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever. (King James Version)

SERMON by Rev. McSpadden

RESPONDING TO GOD’S WORD

*THE APOSTLES’ CREED
I believe in God the Father Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth.
And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord;
who was conceived by the Holy Ghost,
born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, dead and buried; he descended into hell;
the third day he rose again from the dead;
he ascended into heaven,
and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty;
from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Ghost;
the holy catholic church;
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins;
the resurrection of the body;
and the life everlasting. Amen

A LITANY OF THANKSGIVING
Leader: Give thanks to God!
People: With our hearts filled with gratitude, we offer our thanks to God for life that is good, for homes that are safe and secure, for family and friends who are loving and kind, for work that is satisfying, and for days that hold promise and peace.
Leader: Sing praise to God!
People: With joyful voices, we praise God for a world created with wonder and beauty, for earth and sky, for wind and rain, for companionship and compassion, for gentle touch and strength of courage, for insight, wisdom, vision, and hope.
Leader: Declare God’s steadfast love!
People: With our hands, our hearts, and minds, we commit ourselves and all we have been given to God to live according to God’s purpose and God’s ways of love. We dedicate our time, energy, imagination, and love.
We dedicate our financial pledges to the church as a part of our commitment to Christ and a sign of our faith.
