ENTERING GOD’S HOUSE

CALL TO WORSHIP
Leader: To you, O Lord, we lift our souls, longing for you to come once
again into our lives.
People: Surely, the Lord is our Salvation.
Leader: In you, O Lord, we would trust that goodness, wonder, and grace are drawing near.
People: Surely, the Lord is our Hope.
Leader: With you, O Lord, we would walk your paths of righteousness and justice.
People: Surely, the Lord is our Way.

*HYMN No. 2 Come, Thou Long-Expected Jesus

*PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Leader: We know the signs of our faithlessness – the hurtful words we speak, the pain we gift to others, the mistakes we make over and over and over. But God is our righteousness, waiting to forgive us, if we will but pray. I invite you to join with me, as we say,
People: When we could turn to your Word, God-who-comes-in-every-moment, we read the advertisements, believing promises that will not satisfy over time. When we could rely on you for life, we listen to those who spin truth every way imaginable. When we could prepare for you to come and dwell in us, we empty out our souls and hearts to make more room for temptations. Forgive us, Advent-God. Forget our mistakes, as you pour grace into our lives. Restore what is missing in our faith, as you fill us with your justice. Turn our faces towards your Steadfast Love, Jesus Christ, so we might be ready for his coming to us in these days. Amen.

*KYRIE ELEISON
Lord, have mercy upon us.
Christ, have mercy upon us.
Lord, have mercy upon us. Amen.

*ASSURANCE OF PARDON
Leader: How can we thank God for all the grace, the joy, the wonder which have been poured out upon us?
People: We will walk the paths of faithfulness and hope, bringing justice and righteousness to all people. Thanks be to God, we are forgiven! Amen. (Lectionary Liturgies, Advent 1 (c)

RESPONDING TO GOD’S WORD

*DECLARATION OF FAITH
Jesus, the long expected Savior, came into the world as a child, descended from David, conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of Mary, a virgin.
He lived as a Jew among Jews. He announced to his people the coming of God’s kingdom of justice and peace on earth.
We affirm that Jesus was born of woman as is every child, yet born of God’s power as was no other child. In the person and work of Jesus, God himself and a human life are united but not confused, distinguished but not separated. The coming of Jesus was itself the coming of God’s promised rule. Through his birth, life, death, and resurrection, He brings about the relationship between God and humanity that God always intended. “A Declaration of Faith,” Chapter 4 (1) 177th General Assembly of the PCUS, 1977
