THE LIFE AND WORK OF THE CHURCH

ENTERING GOD’S HOUSE

CALL TO WORSHIP

Leader:   Eternal God, you are the power behind things:
                   behind the energy of the storm, behind the heat
                   of a million suns.
People:     Eternal God, you are the power behind all minds:
                   behind the ability to think and reason, behind
                   all understanding of truth.
Leader:   Eternal God, you are the power behind the cross of Christ: behind             the weakness, the torture and the death, behind unconquerable                        love.
People:   We worship and praise you.  Amen.

*HYMN No. 281                                         Guide Me, O Thou Great Jehovah

*PRAYER OF CONFESSION (Unison)

                  Almighty God, we never cease to cut ourselves off from you by our sins, and yet you urge us to repent and promise to hear our prayers with favor.  Grant that we may not stubbornly keep to our sins and be ungrateful of your generosity, but may return to you in such a way as to witness by our lives to the genuineness of our repentance.  Grant that we may stand firm and fast in a right purpose and so endeavor to obey you throughout our lives, at last receiving the fruit of our obedience in your heavenly kingdom.  Amen.

*KYRIE ELEISON

               Lord, have mercy upon us.

               Christ, have mercy upon us.

                Lord, have mercy upon us.  Amen.

*ASSURANCE OF PARDON

*RESPONSE TO GOD’S GRACE    (Hymn No. 322)

 Spirit of the living God, Fall afresh on me;

             Spirit of the living God, Fall afresh on me.

             Spirit of the living God, Fall afresh on me.

RESPONDING TO GOD’S WORD

*THE APOSTLES’ CREED

            I believe in God the Father Almighty,

    maker of heaven and earth.

            And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord;

    who was conceived by the Holy Ghost,

    born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate,

    was crucified, dead and buried; he descended into hell;

    the third day he rose again from the dead;

    he ascended into heaven,

    and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty;

    from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.

            I believe in the Holy Ghost;

    the holy catholic church;

    the communion of saints,

    the forgiveness of sins;

    the resurrection of the body;

    and the life everlasting.  Amen
