THE LIFE AND WORK OF THE CHURCH

ENTERING GOD’S HOUSE

QUIET MOMENT OF PREPARATION

CALL TO WORSHIP

Leader: Something awakened us this morning – perhaps day’s dawning, the

smell of coffee, the sounds of the alarm on the stand or the

newspaper thudding at the door.
People: And now we gather with awakened spirits to worship with

others the Creator of the day.
Leader:  Something moved us this morning – we left behind a sufficiency of

sleep or a restless night, we engaged in feeding and dressing, we

left our homes for here.
People:  And now we gather in this place to worship the Christ who

moves among us and to follow the Spirit which leads us into

deeds of love.
Leader: May ours be a faith that is both awake and moving as we serve our

*HYMN No. 65                                          Guide Me, O Thou Great Jehovah

*PRAYER OF CONFESSION (Unison)O God, we confess that we have not acknowledged you as the source of our successes, our substance, our selves.  We have been far more ready to complain when things go wrong than to praise when all is well.  We have fed our bodies a rich diet while neglecting to feed our souls.  Power and wealth have assumed greater importance to us than sensitivity and service.  We have allowed religious words and forms to substitute for living encounters with the persons you have called us to love.  Forgive us, compassionate Creator, and grant us the opportunity to start over again in this new week.  Keep us from repeating the mistakes of the past or from new evils that could mislead and destroy.  In the name of Christ, we offer our earnest prayers for pardon and deliverance.  Amen.  *KYRIE ELEISON

         Lord, have mercy upon us.

Christ, have mercy upon us.

Lord, have mercy upon us. Amen.

*ASSURANCE OF PARDON

*RESPONSE TO GOD’S GRACE   (Hymn No. 288)

Spirit of the living God, Fall afresh on me;

Spirit of the living God, Fall afresh on me.

Melt me, mold me, Fill me, use me.

Spirit of the living God, Fall afresh on me.

                                 RESPONDING TO GOD’S WORD

*THE APOSTLES’ CREED

          I believe in God the Father Almighty,

   maker of heaven and earth.

           And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord;

   who was conceived by the Holy Ghost,

   born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate,

   was crucified, dead and buried; he descended into hell;

   the third day he rose again from the dead;

   he ascended into heaven,

   and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty;

   from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.

           I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church;

   the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins;

   the resurrection of the body;

   and the life everlasting. Amen
