THE LIFE AND WORK OF THE CHURCH

ENTERING GOD’S HOUSE

QUIET MOMENT OF PREPARATION

CALL TO WORSHIP

Leader:   Make a joyful noise to the LORD, all the earth.

People:   Worship the LORD with gladness; come into his presence with

               singing.

Leader:   Know that the LORD is God, it is he that made us and we are his.

People:   We are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.

Leader:   Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise. Give

thanks to him, bless his name.

ALL:    For the LORD is good; his steadfast love endures forever, and

             his faithfulness to all generations.

*HYMN No. 35                                            Praise Ye the Lord, the Almighty

*PRAYER OF CONFESSION

Leader:   Let us humbly confess our sins unto Almighty God.

Unison: Gracious, loving and all-knowing God, we confess that we often only trust those things and those people we can understand, whatever is most familiar to us. We admit that often we have confidence only in those events and people we know and can control. We take offense—and do not forgive. We need to be reminded that those we consider to be “others” are also made by you and made in your image. That those who may be different from us, those we have disagreed with, those we have never met nor even imagined exist are people just like us. Help us, Lord, to remember that you are the path through which we receive mercy. Help us, Lord, to be open to your guidance, to your Words of saving grace. We ask this through the one we call Savior, Jesus Christ. Amen.

*KYRIE ELEISON

         Lord, have mercy upon us.

Christ, have mercy upon us.

Lord, have mercy upon us. Amen.

*ASSURANCE OF PARDON

*RESPONSE TO GOD’S GRACE   (Hymn No. 288)

Spirit of the living God, Fall afresh on me;

Spirit of the living God, Fall afresh on me.

Melt me, mold me, Fill me, use me.

Spirit of the living God, Fall afresh on me.

RESPONDING TO GOD’S WORD

*THE APOSTLES’ CREED

          I believe in God the Father Almighty,

   maker of heaven and earth.

           And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord;

   who was conceived by the Holy Ghost,

   born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate,

   was crucified, dead and buried; he descended into hell;

   the third day he rose again from the dead;

   he ascended into heaven,

   and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty;

   from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.

           I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church;

   the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins;

   the resurrection of the body;

   and the life everlasting. Amen
