ENTERING GOD’S HOUSE

QUIET MOMENT OF PREPARATION

IN MEMORY OF OUR BELOVED INTERIM MINISTER
Rev. Dr. William Johnson
June 13, 1942 – November 24, 2014

Dear Lord,
The pain that we feel after losing Bill is intense. Remind us Lord of the strength of your love for him and for us.
Grant us Lord the courage to confront our sorrow and the courage to make changes in our lives.
Help us Lord to recall our memories of Bill; the times we laughed, the times we cried, the times we became frustrated,

the times we were spiritually fed. Lord, we value the memories of Bill providing us pastoral care and joy.
Lord, we cherish the special place in our hearts that will always be reserved for him. We thank you Lord for the gift of

Bill’s life and ministry to this church and to each of us.
We pray in Jesus’ name. Amen

*HYMN No. 88 O Come, O Come, Emmanuel
PRAYER OF CONFESSION (Unison)
O most merciful God, as we approach the manger which cradles the Christ, we become aware of our transgressions and lack of faith. The Word took on flesh to be with and for us, but we act as though we have to face life on our own. The Christ child was born to give us divine resources, enabling us to be more than conquerors, but we live as people defeated by the forces that assail us. The Holy Spirit is present to give us hope, but we continue in despair. Forgive us Lord, and send your angels to us once more to give us faith and conviction for the living of our days. In Christ name we pray. Amen

*KYRIE ELEISON
Lord, have mercy upon us.
Christ, have mercy upon us.
Lord, have mercy upon us. Amen.

*ASSURANCE OF PARDON

Leader: God’s peace be with you.
People: Since God has forgiven us in Christ, let us also forgive one
another.

*RESPONSE TO GOD’S GRACE (Hymn No. 288)
Spirit of the living God, Fall afresh on me;
Spirit of the living God, Fall afresh on me.
Melt me, mold me, Fill me, use me.

RESPONDING TO GOD’S WORD

*THE APOSTLES’ CREED
I believe in God the Father Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth.
And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord;
who was conceived by the Holy Ghost,
born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, dead and buried; he descended into hell;
the third day he rose again from the dead;
he ascended into heaven,
and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty;
from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church;
the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins;
the resurrection of the body;
and the life everlasting. Amen

THE SEASON OF ADVENT
The Advent Season has a long tradition in the history of the Christian Church, beginning somewhere near the end of the fourth century. While it was originally celebrated for a period of forty days and included fasting, by the beginning of the seventh century it was confined to the four-week period preceding Christmas. In the calendar of the Christian Church today, the season begins on the Sunday nearest to St. Andrew’s Day (Nov. 30th) and included the four Sundays preceding Christmas as well as the intervening weekdays. It is the first of the six seasons of the Christian Year.

While Advent, in the past, has been observed in many churches as a time of penitence in preparation for the joyous celebration of Christmas, the emphasis has changed recently to one of anticipation. It calls to mind the four-thousand years of waiting for the coming of the Messiah on the part of the Hebrew people. In many churches today, there is also an emphasis upon the second coming of our Lord. For the Christian, Advent not only becomes a time of preparation for the celebration of the coming of Christ into the world, but also a time for the rebirth of his spirit in our lives.

SERMON NOTES
(Things we can do between now and Christmas to better develop an attitude of gratitude.)

1.Start a prayer journal and make note of how many of our prayers are
wonderfully answered.

2. Keep a record of all the kind things that we see other people doing and thank them for it.

3. Take some quiet time and reflect on the many occasions in the past that God has touched our lives in special ways.

4. Allow more time to rejoice in the small pleasures in life. Spend a few more moments with a sunrise or a sunset. Hug the people that you love a little longer and more often.

5. Pass out “Thank Yous” every day from now until Christmas for the little things that people do for you that you too often take for granted.

6. Read a Psalm of Thanksgiving every day.

7. Give thanks for the Van Wyck Church and the opportunity to come and worship.

8. Develop a “Gratitude Board” comprised of pictures and drawings representing all of the people, things, places, activities, occasions, abilities, opportunities for which you are grateful. Take a picture of this on your phone and always carry it with you as a daily reminder of how much you are blessed.
