CALL TO WORSHIP

Leader:  Come, Lord Jesus, come.
People: That new life may be experienced and new hope might be born.
Leader:  Bring to us peace and joy of which the angels sang and shepherds

spoke.
People: That we might join in Your powerful, creative, redemptive

work in the world.

*HYMN No. 121                                                  O Little Town of Bethlehem

 PRAYER OF CONFESSION (Unison)                                                            Even as we praise You, O God, for the coming of Christ, we also acknowledge the sins that make it necessary for Him to come. For we have sinned against innocence, forgotten human suffering, denied pity, excused ourselves from service, and drawn back from love. Forgive us for these and all our sins, and by Your grace, grant that the brightness of His coming may give light to our darkness, as He is born in our hearts through faith. We pray in the name of Jesus. Amen. *KYRIE ELEISON

         Lord, have mercy upon us.

Christ, have mercy upon us.

Lord, have mercy upon us. Amen.

*ASSURANCE OF PARDON

Leader: God’s peace be with you.
People:   Since God has forgiven us in Christ, let us also forgive one

               another.

*RESPONSE TO GOD’S GRACE   (Hymn No. 288)

Spirit of the living God, Fall afresh on me.

RESPONDING TO GOD’S WORD

*THE APOSTLES’ CREED

          I believe in God the Father Almighty,

   maker of heaven and earth.

           And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord;

   who was conceived by the Holy Ghost,

   born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate,

   was crucified, dead and buried; he descended into hell;

   the third day he rose again from the dead;

     he ascended into heaven,

   and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty;

   from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.

           I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church;

   the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins;

   the resurrection of the body;

   and the life everlasting. Amen

THE SEASON OF ADVENT

The Advent Season has a long tradition in the history of the Christian Church, beginning somewhere near the end of the fourth century. While it was originally celebrated for a period of forty days and included fasting, by the beginning of the seventh century it was confined to the four-week period preceding Christmas. In the calendar of the Christian Church today, the season begins on the Sunday nearest to St. Andrew’s Day (Nov. 30th) and included the four Sundays preceding Christmas as well as the intervening weekdays. It is the first of the six seasons of the Christian Year.

While Advent, in the past, has been observed in many churches as a time of penitence in preparation for the joyous celebration of Christmas, the emphasis has changed recently to one of anticipation. It calls to mind the four-thousand years of waiting for the coming of the Messiah on the part of the Hebrew people. In many churches today, there is also an emphasis upon the second coming of our Lord. For the Christian, Advent not only becomes a time of preparation for the celebration of the coming of Christ into the world, but also a time for the rebirth of his spirit in our lives.
