CALL TO WORSHIP

Leader:              I sought the Lord, who answered me and delivered me from my

distress.

People:              Look upon the Lord and be radiant, and let not your face be

              ashamed.

Leader:              At all times I will bless the Lord, whose praise shall be forever

in my mouth.

People:  Taste and see that the Lord is good; happy are those who trust

              in the Lord.

*HYMN No. 305                                              Come Sing, O Church, in Joy!

*PRAYER OF CONFESSION  (Unison)

Gracious God, we confess that like the rich man in the scriptures, we have turned away from you because we do not want our selfishness exposed.  We have left your presence sorrowful, because we do not want to part with those things we deem important.  And so we pray, open our eyes that we may see how we have fallen short of your calling.  Open our ears, that we may clearly hear your summons anew.  Open our hearts, that we might be receptive to the work of your Spirit in and through us.  Let your word of grace and mercy  transform us into the people you want us to be.  This we pray in the name of Jesus Christ.  Amen.            *KYRIE ELEISON

Lord, have mercy upon us.                                                                                               Christ, have mercy upon us.

Lord, have mercy upon us.  Amen.

*ASSURANCE OF PARDON

Leader:     Almighty God our heavenly father, who of his great mercy has

promised forgiveness of sins to all who with hearty repentance and

true faith turn to him: have mercy on you; pardon and deliver you

from all your sins; confirm and strengthen you in all goodness; and

keep you in eternal life; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

People:     Amen.

*RESPONSE TO GOD’S GRACE    (Hymn No. 288)

    Spirit of the living God, Fall afresh on me;

Spirit of the living God, Fall afresh on me.

Melt me, mold me, Fill me, use me.

Spirit of the living God, Fall afresh on me.

RESPONDING TO GOD’S WORD

*THE APOSTLES’ CREED

            I believe in God the Father Almighty,

    maker of heaven and earth.

            And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord;

    who was conceived by the Holy Ghost,

    born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate,

    was crucified, dead and buried; he descended into hell;

    the third day he rose again from the dead;

     he ascended into heaven,

    and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty;

    from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.

            I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church;

    the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins;

    the resurrection of the body;

    and the life everlasting.  Amen

THE MEANING OF LENT

The Lenten period may begin in February or March, as its date is dependent on the time that Easter occurs.  The name Lent comes from the Anglo-Saxon ‘lenten’ meaning ‘spring’.

Lent has been described as “the spiritual tithing of the year” and is considered a season of special self-denial in preparation for Easter.  It is believed to have started to commemorate Christ’s fasting in the wilderness, as well as that of Elijah and Moses.

Lent is 40 days, not including Sundays, beginning 46 days before Easter on Ash Wednesday and ending the Saturday before Easter Sunday.

There is some evidence that before the 3rd century, the last two days of Holy Week were observed in a special way by Christians.  Later, they included the entire week.

This annual feast of Lent was recognized by the Nicean Council in 325 A.D., and Athanasius urged the fourth-day fast for the adherents in Alexandria.

The early church is said to have stressed penitence rather than fasting.  But during the medieval period, rules for abstinence became strict.
