THE LIFE AND WORK OF THE CHURCH

ENTERING GOD’S HOUSE

QUIET MOMENT OF PREPARATION

CALL TO WORSHIP

Leader:              To each of us God makes available a love unfathomable in its

depth, incredible in its intensity.

People:              We will be more open to the power of God’s love.

Leader:              As followers of Christ we will bear God’s love into the world.

People:              We will raise our hearts in worship, wonder, and thanksgiving

for all that God gives us and all that God asks of us.

*HYMN No. 307                                            God of Grace and God of Glory

*CORPORATE PRAYER OF CONFESSION:

Leader:              No occasion justifies hatred; no injustice warrants bitterness.  We

choose love.  We will love God and what God loves.

People:              We choose love.

Leader:              We will invite God to be the God of circumstance.  We will refuse

the temptation to be cynical which is the tool of the lazy thinker.

We will refuse to see people as anything less than human beings,

created by God.  We will refuse to see any problem as anything

less than an opportunity to see God.

People:              We choose joy.

Leader:              We will live forgiven.  We will forgive so that we might live.

People:              We choose peace.

Leader:              We will overlook the inconveniences of the world.  Instead of

cursing the one who takes our place, we will invite him to do so.

Rather than complain that the wait is too long, we will thank God

for a moment to pray.  Instead of clinching our fists at new

assignments, we will face them with joy and courage.

People:              We chose patience.

Leader:              We will be kind to the poor, for they are alone.  We will be kind

to the rich, for they are afraid.  We will be kind to the unkind,

for such is how God treats us.

People:              We choose kindness.

Leader:              We will go without a dollar before we will take a dishonest one.

We will be overlooked before we will boast.  We will confess

before we will accuse.

People:              We choose goodness.

Leader:              We will keep our promises.  Our debtors will not regret their trust.

Our associates will not question our word.  Our spouse will not

question our love.  Our children will not fear that their parent

will not be there for them.

People:              We choose faithfulness.

Leader:              Nothing will be won by force.  We choose to be gentle.  We will

Only raise our voices in praise.  We will only clench our fists in

prayer.  We will only make demands on ourselves.

People:              We choose gentleness.

Leader:              We are spiritual beings.  After our bodies are dead, our spirits will

soar.  We refuse to let what will only rot tomorrow to rule the

eternal.  We choose self-control.  We will only be drunk with joy.

We will be impassioned only by faith.  We will only be influenced

by God.  We will only be taught by Christ.

People:              We choose self-control.

Unison:  Lord, God, we commit ourselves to love, joy, peace, patience,

kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.  If

we succeed, we will give you the praise.  If we fail, we will seek

your grace.  For we will rest in your embracing arms now and

  forever.  Amen

 *CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE:    (KYRIE ELEISON)

Lord, have mercy upon us.                                                                                                 Christ, have mercy upon us.

Lord, have mercy upon us.  Amen.

*ASSURANCE OF PARDON

Leader:              Lord God, your light surrounds and warms us.  Your love enfolds

and fills us.  Your mercy forgives and cleanses us.  Your power

protects and heals us.  Wherever we are, you are.

People:              Thank you, God, very, very much.  Amen.

*RESPONSE TO GOD’S GRACE    (Hymn No. 468, vs. 1&3)

In my life, Lord, be glorified; be glorified.

In my life, Lord, be glorified today.

In your church, Lord, be glorified; be glorified.

In your church, Lord, be glorified today.

*THE APOSTLES’ CREED

I believe in God the Father Almighty,

    maker of heaven and earth.

            And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord;

who was conceived by the Holy Ghost,

born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate,

    was crucified, dead and buried; he descended into hell;

    the third day he rose again from the dead;

     he ascended into heaven,

    and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty;

from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.
