Van Wyck Presbyterian Church               Published Quarterly – July 2015 – Volume 21

“Nothing happens in the church until someone gives something. According to the Word, God did exactly that. God gave us grace, undeserved and unconditional love. God did not allow that offer to expire, but continues his covenant to give us grace, unendingly.”        –Ed Krause—

Welcome Our New Minister

On July 19th, the Pastor Nominating Committee (PNC) made a recommendation to the congregation to accept Carson Overstreet as the next minister of Van Wyck Presbyterian Church. The congregation unanimously approved the recommendation.

Carson has been serving as an associate pastor at the First Presbyterian Church of Tupelo, Mississippi. She is married to Doug and has two daughters who are 12 and 14 years old. She is from the Lynchburg, Virginia area and moved to Charlotte around 2001. Her family started attending Sardis Presbyterian Church and became increasingly involved in the church. She attended Columbia theological seminary in Georgia and graduated in 2011. After graduating, she accepted the call at First Presbyterian in Tupelo.

Her target start date is August 30th, pending the sale of her home Tupelo. The PNC is very excited for Carson to start at VWPC. We think that Carson is an awesome fit, and we can’t wait for everybody to meet her.

Fun Day at Bethelwoods

The Christian Education Committee sponsored a picnic at Bethelwoods on July 20th. The first group met at the pool and had a wonderful time swimming. Afterwards, kids and parents played quite a few competitive games of gaga ball. The second group met up at the picnic shelter. We had about 30 kids and adults participate. The kids enjoyed the swing set, played Frisbee and soccer, and got really sandy on the volleyball court. Clearly, the highlight was the face painting. We had a few cheetahs, snakes, mice, butterfly, etc. A big thanks to our artist, Camille Dunlap.

We settled in for a relaxed meal of hotdogs and fried chicken. Everyone seemed to have a great time. It served as a good reminder that we should continue to use Bethelwoods as a resource in the future.

A big thanks to all who participated and helped make it happen!

— Stuart Graham and the CE Committee

The Christian Education Committee is thrilled to have Karen Helms to take care of our 11 o’clock nursery each Sunday.

   Report from Worship Committee

The Worship Committee met briefly to organize for our recent Communion Service held on May 24. Members of our committee prepared the elements for the service and the cleaned up afterwards.

We were blessed to have Wallace Hutchinson with Red Bird Missions, Laine Ardrey and Emily Helms share with our congregation on Sunday, July 19, their mission trip to Kentucky. This was a powerful witness to all of how many lives are changed from mission trips. Thank you Laine and Emily for a very spiritual and up lifting worship service.

Our committee is very grateful to Dr. Craig Butler for his devotion and service to our church during our present time of searching for a new minister. His uncompromised devotion has been demonstrated each Sunday through his consistent presence in our pulpit. Maintaining the continuity of a single minister over this period of change has allowed us more comfortable and meaningful worship services This degree of devotion has certainly endeared Dr. Butler to our congregation, and he will be missed by all when he relinquishes our pulpit to our new minister. Our committee is hopeful that Dr.Butler will remain with us until new minister arrives.

We are grateful that our Pastor Search Committee has finalized their selection of Rev. Carson Overstreet as our new minister. Our Worship Committee looks forward to her spiritual leadership and getting to know her and her family.

–Janesta Williams, Chairperson

Stewardship—A Way of Life

This service that you perform is not only supplying the needs of God’s people but is also overflowing in many expressions of thanks to God.                                    2 Corinthians 9:12

Simply stated, this verse pretty much sums up Stewardship! The Stewardship Committee thanks you very much for your faithful financial support of Van Wyck Presbyterian Church through June!

For this period, gifts exceed our expectations. A joyous thanks to everyone whose financial contributions ensure our Church can continue its mission and service. We are aware, however, that in summertime actual giving often drops behind. While you are away on vacation, please remember to send your tithes, gifts, and offerings to the Church office so we can keep the mission of Van Wyck Presbyterian Church moving forward during your absence.
