First Sunday of Advent

Prelude

Welcome & Announcements

Quiet Moment of Preparation

Call to Worship

L: Today we come together to prepare for the birth of a King.

P: Today we make ready our welcome for God’s only Son, Jesus of Nazareth.

L: We prepare for the special and holy season of Advent, the season of remembering the coming of Christ in His birth…

P: And we renew the special meaning of the Advent season, the season of the risen Christ coming toward us with new hope for eternal life.

L: Let us clear our minds and open our hearts to the coming of the Lord.

P: Let us also honor Christ’s birth and return by adorning our church as if for the coming of the King.

L: Let our songs and symbols represent the dedication of this church, and of our very lives, to the glory of God and the reality of God’s love through God’s Son, Jesus Christ.

All: “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have everlasting life.”

*Hymn No. 88   O Come, O Come Emmanuel (verses 1, 5-7)

*Prayer of Confession (Unison)

Loving God, we come to your house this morning seeking your hope.  The holiday season brings joy but also stress. We find ourselves pulled into many directions. We confess the busyness that claims our lives. Help us to pause and reflect on your promises in this journey towards the manger.   (Silent personal confession). Amen.

*Assurance of Pardon

Leader: Be mindful of God’s steadfast love and faithfulness.

All: The love of Jesus Christ teaches us the ways of forgiveness and the hope of our salvation. Amen.

Hanging of the Greens

Listening and Responding to God’s Story of Hope

Micah 4:3-4

God shall judge between many peoples, and shall arbitrate between strong nations far away; they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks; nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war anymore; but they shall all sit under their own vines and under their own fig trees, and no one shall make them afraid; for the mouth of the LORD of hosts has spoken.

The Evergreens and Wreaths

First Carol 82              Come, Thou Long-Expected Jesus

As we sing the wreaths will be placed in the windows and on the front doors by Jay Jones, Jack Leedy, and Jack Wilt.

Jeremiah 33: 14-16

The days are surely coming, says the Lord, when I will fulfil the promise I made to the house of Israel and the house of Judah. In those days and at that time I will cause a righteous Branch to spring up for David; and he shall execute justice and righteousness in the land. In those days Judah will be saved and Jerusalem will live in safety. And this is the name by which it will be called: ‘The Lord is our righteousness.’

The Poinsettias

Second Carol 133       O Come, All Ye Faithful

All who donated a poinsettia may place them around the choir loft, pulpit and Communion table.

Matthew 1:23

‘Look, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall name him Emmanuel,’ which means, ‘God is with us.’

The Nativity Table

The Advent Wreath

Third Carol 115          Away in a Manger

As we sing Claudia Thompson and Emily Helms will arrange the Nativity and the Overstreet family will arrange the Advent wreath.

Psalm 96:11-13

Let the heavens be glad, and let the earth rejoice; let the sea roar, and all that fills it; let the field exult, and everything in it. Then shall all the trees of the forest sing for joy before the LORD; for he is coming, for he is coming to judge the earth. He will judge the world with righteousness, and the peoples with his truth.

The Tree and Chrismons

Christmas Carol Melody

A nursery is provided afterwards for children in Kindergarten and younger.

John 1:9-12

The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world. He was in the world, and the world came into being through him; yet the world did not know him. He came to what was his own, and his own people did not accept him. But to all who received him, who believed in his name, he gave power to become children of God.

The Candles, Windows, and Sconces

Fifth Carol 145                       What Child is This
