QUIET MOMENT OF PREPARATION

LIGHTING OF THE ADVENT CANDLE              John and Shirley Cauthen

Leader:   Listen to God’s word of Peace.

Let me hear what God the Lord will speak, for he will speak peace to his people, to his faithful, to those who turn to him in their hearts. Surely his salvation is at hand for those who fear him, that his glory may dwell in our land. Steadfast love and faithfulness will meet; righteousness and peace will kiss each other. (Psalm 85:8-10)

Leader:  Can you hear it? All:        What is it? Leader:  God’s Word is coming. All:        We are listening. We are eager to hear. Leader:  A voice cries out and declares the Promise of Peace. All:        We stand in awe. Leader:  Things are going to even out in the world. All:        All people will embrace each other. Leader:  Today we light the candle of Peace. All:        Our peace comes from God.

*HYMN No. 123                                      It Came Upon the Midnight Clear

*PRAYER OF CONFESSION: (Unison)

              Holy God, you are the One who gives the promise of peace to comfort your people. We confess that we have not extended peace to others. At times we cause conflict and even doubt that peace is possible in our families, community, and world. As we journey through Advent from the darkness to the light of your salvation, open our eyes that we might see your faithfulness all around us. Restore our trust in your goodness. Light the path ahead for us to walk in your ways and work for peace.  Amen

*CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE  (Kyrie Eleison)

Lord, have mercy upon us.

Christ, have mercy upon us.

Lord, have mercy upon us.  Amen

*ASSURANCE OF PARDON

Leader:   Friends, we hold confidence that if we repent then God is sure to                   forgive us of our sins.

People:  The One who began a good work within us will bring it to

              completion. In Jesus Christ we are forgiven.

*RESPONSE TO GOD’S GRACE    (Hymn No. 468, vs. 1&3)

In my life, Lord, be glorified; be glorified.

In my life, Lord, be glorified today.

In your church, Lord, be glorified; be glorified.

In your church, Lord, be glorified today.

RESPONDING TO GOD’S WORD

*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH      The Apostles’ Creed

 I believe in God the Father Almighty

                maker of heaven and earth.

            And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord;

    who was conceived by the Holy Ghost,

    born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate,

    was crucified, dead and buried; he descended into hell;

    the third day he rose again from the dead;

     he ascended into heaven,

    and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty;

    from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.

            I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church;

    the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins;

    the resurrection of the body;

    and the life everlasting.  Amen
