CALL TO WORSHIP                                                  Psalm 71:1-6,  Adapted     Leader:   In you, O Lord, we take refuge; never let us be put to shame.  People:   God alone is our rock and strong fortress.                           Leader:   You, O Lord, are our hope and trust. We learned to depend upon                      you since our youth.                                                                  People:   We will continue to praise God in times of joy and sorrow,                         worry and challenge.                                                             Leader:   Let us worship God!

*HYMN No. 839                                        Blessed Assurance , Jesus Is Mine!

*PRAYER OF CONFESSION

Leader:   Remember that our Lord Jesus can sympathize with us in our                         weakness, since in every respect he was tempted as we are, yet                without sin. Let us then approach the throne of grace with                  confidence and find grace to help in time of need. Let us pray.

People:   Lord God, we confess that we have sinned against you in                            thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what          we have left undone. In your mercy forgive what we have been,    help us amend what we are, and direct what we shall be, so                            that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways, to the           glory of your holy name. Amen.

*CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE  (Kyrie Eleison)

Lord, have mercy upon us.

Christ, have mercy upon us.

Lord, have mercy upon us.  Amen

*ASSURANCE OF PARDON                                  Psalm 71:19-20, Adapted

Leader:    God alone has done great things through the life, death, and                          resurrection of Jesus Christ. Grace and forgiveness claim our                        thoughts, words, and deeds and revive us again.

People:   All day long we will praise God for the righteous help we                            experience in Jesus Christ by the power of the Holy Spirit.

*RESPONSE TO GOD’S GRACE    (Hymn No. 468, vs. 1&3)

In my life, Lord, be glorified; be glorified.

In my life, Lord, be glorified today.

In your church, Lord, be glorified; be glorified.

In your church, Lord, be glorified today.

*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH   (Unison)       A Brief Statement of Faith, 10.4

We trust in God the Holy Spirit,

everywhere the giver and renewer of life.

The Spirit justifies us by grace through faith,

sets us free to accept ourselves and to love God and neighbor,

and binds us together with all believers

in the one body of Christ, the Church.

     The same Spirit

who inspired the prophets and apostles

rules our faith and life in Christ through Scripture,

engages us through the Word proclaimed,

claims us in the waters of baptism,

feeds us with the bread of life and the cup of salvation,

and calls women and men to all ministries of the Church.

“Glimpses of Grace”

Today is the last of a 5 week sermon series on “Glimpses of Grace.” Each week we will look into a gospel story of healing and search for glimpses of God’s grace in our time of need. In response to the sermons we will also affirm our faith using “A Brief Statement of Faith,” from The Book of Confessions to claim God’s truth through each movement of the series.

The sermon series concludes Sunday February 7 with a Prayer of Intercession for Healing and Wholeness where all will be invited to come forward to receive a blessing and to be anointed with a mark of the cross with oil.

Let us begin this New Year searching for glimpses of God’s grace among us.

January 10 –Glimpses of Grace in Grief: John 11: 28-35

January 17 – Glimpses of Grace in Healing: Mark 5: 25-34

January 24 –Glimpses of Grace in Forgiveness: Luke 15: 11-32

January 31 – Glimpses of Grace in Worry: Matthew 6: 25-34

February 7 – Glimpses of Grace in Anointing: John 12: 1-8

“Love is a Verb” F00D & SOUPER BOWL OF CARING

SUNDAY COLLECTION

We have decided to extend our collection of food for the HOPE in Lancaster food pantry as well as take up a monetary collection on Feb. 7 to participate in the Souper Bowl of Caring, with the funds also going to HOPE. We feel that combining this effort of food and money will make a bigger impact on helping the poor in our county.

The Souper Bowl of Caring was started in Columbia after a simple prayer by seminary intern Brad Smith at Spring Valley Presbyterian Church of “Lord, even as we enjoy the Super Bowl football game, help us to be mindful of those who are without a bowl of soup to eat.” Ever since collections have been taken to support a local charity on the day that people come together for football and fun.

As we cheer on the Carolina Panthers, we hope you will be just as excited to help us make a real difference for HOPE in Lancaster with your food and monetary donations.

Thank you.
